Gov't expands operations to address illegal immigration

The government has decided to intensify its efforts in combating illegal immigration through an expanded series of operations. The Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology, alongside Maldives Immigration, has been actively conducting raids and operations over the past few months.

In a press conference, the authorities shed light on the initiatives of the newly formed task force dedicated to addressing illegal immigration. Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan revealed that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has urged a collaborative approach among ministries to find a swift and long-term solution to this issue. The task force, which includes the Health Protection Agency (HPA), the Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA), and the Ministry of Economic Trade and Development, will see active participation from these bodies in all raids and operations. They will also take necessary legal actions as part of this effort.

The initiative to address illegal immigration was launched by President Dr. Muizzu in July, following Cabinet recommendations. Since then, joint operations between the Ministry of Homeland Security and Maldives Immigration have led to the detention of several immigrants involved in illegal trade and food production activities that fail to meet food security standards. Efforts are ongoing to deport these individuals.

To tackle the issue, the government has introduced a nationwide programme named Operation Kurangi. The operation includes biometric identification procedures aimed at targeting undocumented immigrants and facilitating their deportation through coordinated efforts with relevant embassies.
