Uthuru ISPS Gate inaugurated to serve vessels in north of Maldives

The Uthuru International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Gate has been inaugurated to provide maritime services for vessels navigating the northern region of the Maldives. The gate was officially inaugurated by Justice (Retired) Idhrees Adam.

Located in Ihavandhippolhu Atoll, the northernmost area of the Maldives, this region is considered a strategic and safe zone for international maritime traffic. The economists view it as the most suitable area for providing maritime services, with over 200 vessels passing through daily, transporting goods worth billions of dollars. Until now, neighboring countries have provided the bunkering and maritime services for these ships, but the introduction of these services within the Maldives will bring significant economic benefits. Bunkering services in particular will become a crucial contributor to the country's economy.

Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) and the State Trading Organisation (STO) will offer offshore bunkering services in the north, with MPL also providing a full range of other maritime services. A specialised website has been launched by MPL to facilitate these services, which will be delivered through the port facility at Uligan in Haa Alifu Atoll. Agents will also coordinate with the port through a call centre to arrange the necessary services for vessels.

In collaboration with other government companies, MPL will offer various maritime services, including pilotage, yacht docking, crew replacement, and water supply, in partnership with Fenaka Corporation Limited. Additional services include ship maintenance through the Kulhudhuffushi City port, fuel supply via the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), and waste disposal from vessels through Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO).

The combined offering of bunkering and Uthuru ISPS Gate services is expected to significantly boost foreign exchange inflows to the Maldives. The economists believe that the launch of these services will provide substantial benefits, especially as international transport routes undergo significant changes.
