Maldives High Commission in Sri Lanka issues advisory amid curfew

The Maldives High Commission in Sri Lanka has issued a public advisory urging Maldivians in Sri Lanka to remain indoors during the curfew hours imposed by Sri Lankan authorities. The curfew, which is in effect from 22:00hrs to 06:00hrs, has been declared in connection with the ongoing presidential elections.

In its statement, the High Commission emphasised the importance of complying with the curfew and advised Maldivians to avoid venturing outside during these hours. For any emergencies, the High Commission has made its hotline available for assistance.

Additionally, the High Commission announced that September 23, will be a public holiday in Sri Lanka due to the presidential election, and the Maldives High Commission will also observe the holiday on that day.

Sri Lanka's presidential election was triggered by the resignation of former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in July 2022. Following his resignation, Ranil Wickremesinghe was appointed as president by the country's legislature. A total of 38 candidates are contesting in Sri Lanka's 10th presidential election, and the counting of votes has already begun.

The Maldives High Commission urged Maldivians residing in Sri Lanka to stay informed and follow local guidelines to ensure their safety during this crucial period.
