Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has announced that the first Waqf building in the atolls of the country will be constructed in Addu City, following the selection of the best proposal submitted to the ministry.
Speaking at a press conference detailing the ministry's initiatives, Minister Shaheem highlighted efforts to revive the Islamic Fund, a key component of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's manifesto. He noted that one of the major projects under this effort is the construction of Waqf buildings in Male' City and across the atolls. He also provided updates on the Dar ul-Salaam Islamic Complex in Hulhumale' and Dar ul-Argam in Male', stating that construction on Dar ul-Argam is expected to begin by the end of this year, with Dar ul-Salaam following early next year. The entire Waqf project, valued at USD 13 million, is projected to generate an annual income of USD 2 million for the Waqf Fund.
Additionally, Minister Shaheem said that 10 proposals were received from city and atoll councils, with an additional 14 from local island councils. He said that the the proposal received from Addu City Council was deemed the best, leading to the decision to construct the USD 2 million Addu Waqf Building. He said that the ministry is currently in discussions with Addu City Mayor Ali Nizar regarding financing options, which include taking a loan from the Islamic Fund or seeking assistance from the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB). He also said that the project is slated to begin in early 2025.
Furthermore, Minister Shaheem emphasised that the project would enable the promotion of Islamic activities in Addu without relying on the government budget. He also said that it will support mosque renovations, religious competitions, and other initiatives.
Currently, the only operational Waqf building in the Maldives is Dar Al-Eiman in Male', which primarily funds mosque renovations. It generates USD 400,000 annually for the Waqf Fund.
