President expresses concerns over European tariff on Maldivian exports

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has expressed his concerns over the European tariff imposed on Maldivian fish products exported, noting that the increased fees present substantial disadvantages for the Maldives. He voiced his concern during a bilateral meeting held with the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen. The meeting was held on the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA79).

The discussions between the two leaders focused on the strong and dynamic relations between the Maldives and the European Union (EU). They further expressed a mutual desire to further enhance the diplomatic ties.

During the meeting, President Dr. Muizzu presented the development agenda of the Maldives, shedding light on key areas requiring additional assistance to advance the country's progress. The president stressed that over the 24% tariff imposed on Maldivian fish exports to the EU, noting that this taxation significantly hinders the Maldives' competitiveness in the EU market. He also emphasised the Maldives' efforts in climate adaptation and mitigation, aiming to reduce the negative impacts of climate change.

In response, the President of the European Commission reaffirmed the EU’s unwavering support for the Maldives. Praising the Maldives’ proactive stance on climate change, she positively acknowledged the country’s request for increased assistance in adaptation and mitigation efforts.

Concluding the meeting, both leaders reiterated their dedication to strengthening the diplomatic relations, while collaborating on matters of mutual interest.
