Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has announced that the first vessel seeking bunkering services is scheduled to arrive on October 3.
Developing the maritime sector such that it significantly contributes to the economic growth is a pledge of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. In pursuit of this objective, the government launched a facility named "Uthuru Maritime Services" on September 18, aimed at providing essential maritime services to vessels travelling to the north.
In a social media post, MPL's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mohamed Wajeeh Ibrahim stated that the facility will provide 14 services, noting that foreign vessels have been inquiring about these offerings. He further disclosed that an oil products tanker registered to Penama will dock at Ihavandhippolhu Atoll on October 3. He revealed that the services sought by the tanker include pilotage services, fresh water bunkering and crew changing services. Additionally, Wajeeh stated that food items and spare parts will also be supplied.
In addition to MPL, private companies will actively participate in delivering services to this vessel. MPL mentioned that the vessel will remain at Ihavandhippolhu Atoll for approximately five days for maintenance services, which presents a significant opportunity for local residents within the region to enhance trade.
The International Ship and Port Security (ISPS) Gate facility introduced by MPL is also situated in Ihavandhippolhu Atoll. The facility was developed to provide maritime services meeting the international standards. To provide more information to customers, MPL developed a special website designated for this purpose, as well as a call centre to provide services 24/7.
The government invested USD 15–20 million, to initiate international bunkering services. The services were launched in joint collaboration with Vitol Bunkers.
