Election Commission of Maldives (ECM) has introduced an online system in which members of political parties can request for deregistration.
ECM announced that party members can now submit application forms through the main portal, requesting for deregistration. It said that this initiative aims to enhance and strengthen the services provided by the commission, and is also under the efforts of the ECM to digitalise its services. Furthermore, the portal allows applicants to track updates regarding their applications. With this change, ECM will discontinue it physical deregistration services.
The main portal of ECM can be accessed through Efaas, and it provides a total of three services. It also provides various information regarding elections.
Recently, ECM brought amendments to the Political Parties Act, stipulating that individuals who change parties without notifying the ECM will be returned to their original parties. The amendment brought specifies that individuals must be removed from their party within 14 days of requesting a change. If this is not implemented, the individual's name will be removed from the party register through arrangements made by the ECM.
