ECM announces aim to consolidate all electoral laws

The Elections Commission of the Maldives has announced its intention to consolidate all electoral laws in the Maldives. Currently, several separate laws govern elections, including the General Elections Act, the Presidential Elections Act, the Parliamentary Elections Act, and the Local Council Elections Act.

During an appearance on a program of PSM News, President of the Elections Commission of the Maldives Fuad Thaufeeq explained that the commission is reviewing all election-related laws with the aim of merging them. He mentioned that discussions are ongoing with commission members and the legal team to facilitate this process.

Fuad acknowledged that the fragmentation of these laws has resulted in public confusion. He emphasized that consolidating the laws would enhance the commission's efficiency by creating a clear, unified framework. He noted that three out of five years are dedicated to election activities, with the remaining two years focused on legislative updates and staff training.

Additionally, Fuad expressed his commitment to amending existing laws as needed and developing new legislation in preparation for the 2026 elections. The commission is already proposing changes, including a measure that would allow political parties with fewer than 10,000 members to receive funding from the state budget.
