Parliamentarians Asma Rasheedh and Fathimath Saudha have been elected to significant positions within the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) during its 149th Assembly in Geneva.
Asma Rasheedh has been appointed to the High-Level Advisory Group on Counter-Terrorism and Violent Extremism, while Fathimath Saudha will represent the Asia Pacific region at the Young Parliamentarians Forum. Both positions are specifically designated for women from the Asia Pacific.
The Young Parliamentarians Forum serves as a vital platform advocating for increased youth participation in legislative bodies worldwide, recognizing that young people currently make up less than 3 percent of legislative memberships. The forum aims to amplify their voices in political decision-making.
The High-Level Advisory Group on Countering Terrorism and Violent Extremism supports legislative efforts to combat terrorism and provides guidance on relevant policies and measures. The IPU has also acknowledged that the Parliament of Maldives is one of the most active among its member countries, highlighting its commitment to effective legislative practices and international cooperation.
