President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has appointed a High Commissioner to India and an Ambassador to Saudi Arabia. He designated Aishath Azeema as the High Commissioner of the Maldives to India and Ahmed Sareer as the Ambassador of the Maldives to Saudi Arabia.
The Maldivian Parliament officially approved Azeema's appointment, securing 79 votes in favour. The Foreign Relations Committee unanimously endorsed her nomination, forwarding it to Parliament without an interview, citing her extensive qualifications and experience.
Azeema has held various positions within government ministries since 1988 and has benefited from both domestic and international training programs. Her previous roles include serving as Ambassador to China and Deputy Ambassador of the Maldives to the United Kingdom. Additionally, she has worked as Additional Secretary and Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, further underscoring her qualifications for this new position.
The Parliament approved Ahmed Sareer’s appointment as the Maldives' Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, with 86 members voting in favour. His nomination was referred to the Foreign Relations Committee, where it received unanimous approval. Currently, Sareer holds the position of Ambassador at Large in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Beginning his career in 1986, Sareer has occupied several prominent roles, including Foreign Secretary and Ambassador to the United States. From November 2018 to September 2024, he worked at the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Jeddah, specializing in Asian affairs and conflict resolution.
Sareer has represented the Maldives at the SAARC Secretariat and participated in twelve sessions of the United Nations General Assembly. He chaired the Alliance of Small Island States from 2015 to 2017 and holds degrees in Social Sciences as well as Foreign Affairs and Trade. Additionally, he is an accomplished artist, with works exhibited internationally and displayed in official venues.
