Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has reaffirmed the Administration’s commitment to independent journalism, stating that the Administration will extend full support to journalists and journalism. The statement was made by the Vice President at the 11th Journalism Awards.
Speaking at the ceremony, Vice President Latheef noted that empowering journalists and promoting journalism is a key priority of the administration. He stated that the government is working to collaborate with journalist, noting that the current administration does not intend on hiding any information, thereby ensuring transparency. The Vice President further reiterated the government's unwavering commitment to supporting journalists as well.
Noting that the current administration has paved a path for independent journalism, Vice President Latheef acknowledged the success of several journalists. He also expressed happiness as seeing the youth engagement in the journalism field.
Reflecting on the modern media space, Vice President Latheef appealed to journalists to verify the accuracy of information sources, present balanced views, and fulfil their obligations truthfully and with accountability, especially considering modern tools such as artificial intelligence. He also called on journalists to uphold Dhivehi language norms and utilise media to uplift citizens. The Vice President further stressed on the need to create more talented journalists from schools, colleges, universities.
