President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has decided to confer the highest Civilian Award, the Order of the Distinguished Rule of Izzuddin (ODRI), on the Chancellor of the Islamic University of Maldives (IUM) Dr. Mohamed Zahir Hussain, for his distinguished service and contributions to the education sector.
This decision was taken by President Dr. Muizzu, to recognise Dr. Zahir's outstanding contribution to the development of education in the Maldives, and educating the people of the Maldives. He previously held the position of the Minister of Education, and brought transformational changes to the education system. As such, Dr. Zahir played a significant role in conducting basic educational programmes and in introducing community schools as well. He additionally was engaged in works to establish education centres in atolls.
Moreover, Dr. Zahir made significant contributions to the advancement of modern education within the country. In addition to serving IUM as the Chancellor on a previous stance, he has held various ministerial positions, served as an advisor to the Ministry of Education, and assumed several other key leadership roles.
President Dr. Muizzu will confer the honour to Dr. Zahir at the official function to mark this year’s Republic Day. The ceremony is scheduled to take place at 2015hrs at Dharubaaruge on November 10.
During this ceremony, the President’s National Award for Special Achievement will also be presented. This year, 40 achievers selected by the Special Awards Committee will receive the award. At the function, 53 persons will also receive awards for service to the state. The National Awards Committee selects the nominees for the awards for service to the state.
