President Defends Constitutional Amendments as People-Centric Reforms

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has explained the rationale behind recent constitutional amendments, describing them as measures taken in the best interest of the Maldivian people. He made the remarks while addressing the residents of Mathiveri, Alifu Alifu Atoll as part of his ongoing tour to select islands in the Alifu Alifu and Kaafu Atolls.

In his address, the President explained the necessity for the amendments and the benefits they would bring to the people. He highlighted five key changes brought to the Maldives Constitution, including amendments on the Maldives' territory, the transfer of Maldivian territory to foreign parties or for military use, conditions for parliament membership, seeking the public's opinion before bringing changes to the Constitution, as well as amendments to the responsibilities of the President.

The President detailed that despite five significant changes brought to the Constitution, the only amendment receiving public attention was the changes affecting parliamentarians. However, all five amendments are designed to bring power to the people and strengthen democratic principles, he emphasised.

"All these years, the state was not required to consult the people to bring changes to the Maldives' territory. A two-thirds majority vote by the Parliament could change our territory. However, the amendments we pushed for will not allow even an inch of our territory without a 'four-thirds majority'," he stated.

The President emphasised the amendments would bring stability and development to the country while protecting the country's independence and sovereignty.
