Three members of Maldivian Parliament have been elected to significant positions in the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). They were elected to the posts at the Inter-Parliamentary Union (UPI) Assembly held from 5 to 9 April in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
According to the Parliament Secretariat, Anara Naeem, Member of Parliament for Huraa Constituency, was elected to the Bureau of Women Parliamentarians. Member of Parliament for Gadhdhoo Constituency Mohamed Ali was elected to the Working Group on Science and Technology, while Member of Parliament for Nilandhoo Constituency Fathimath Saudha was elected to the Standing Committee on Peace and International Security. All three members were elected to represent the Asia-Pacific Group, of which the Maldives is a part.
Maldivian parliamentarians have held various positions in the IPU even in the past.
The 150th IPU Assembly was attended by six members of the Parliament from Maldives, including the Speaker of the Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla. Other delegates included Minority Leader of the Parliament and Member of Parliament for Hithadhoo South Constituency Ibrahim Nazil, Member of Parliament for Central Maafannu, Asma Rasheed, Member of Parliament for Maafannu South Abdulla Rifau, and Member of Parliament for Henveiru South Hussain Imran Latheef, along with Anara, Saudha, and Mohamed Ali.
The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) is a organisation founded in 1989 composed of national parliaments. The Maldives Parliament joined IPU in 2005.
