EC prepares to introduce e-voting

Manual vote counting will be conducted despite the use of e-voting in the upcoming Local Council Elections, the Elections Commission says.

The commission first initiated work to introduce e-voting in the country in 2008, followed by a decision to adopt e-voting in 2011. It is now preparing to introduce e-voting in the Local Council Election slated for January 2017.

Member of the Elections Commission Ahmed Akram said e-voting would be conducted along with manual voting in 3 islands in the election. E-voting will only be utilised in the vote counting process, as a bid to gain public trust in the system, he added.

The commission is currently conducting various awareness programmes about e-voting, with sessions already held in 10 atolls. It plans to conduct awareness programmes in all atolls by the end of the year.
