Deliberations at the 'Rahvehinge Salla' forum, currently taking place in Ukulhas, Alifu Alifu Atoll, focus on reaffirming the administration's commitment to enhancing civic engagement within its decentralised governance model, according to the Ministry of Cities, Local Government, and Public Works. This three-day forum, the ministry said, highlights the indispensable role of civil society organisations in fortifying decentralised structures.
The ministry described the forum as a pivotal initiative for fostering public participation, noting its potential to drive significant progress in strengthening the governance framework. The event has drawn 55 participants, including council presidents, council members, and secretaries-general, to deliberate on a comprehensive agenda designed to promote inclusivity and collaboration between local councils and the citizenry.
Central to the discussions, the ministry said, are strategies aimed at increasing public involvement, integrating marginalised groups into council-led initiatives, and reinforcing transparency through enhanced communication, access to information, and adherence to open government practices. Further dialogues are exploring mechanisms to enable civil society organisations to assume a more integral role within the decentralised governance system.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu continues to champion initiatives aimed at consolidating decentralisation and cultivating a culture of public empowerment. The ministry reiterated that empowering local councils with greater financial autonomy remains a cornerstone of the administration's decentralisation policy. The ministry also underscored the public's expectation for councils to adopt consultative and cooperative approaches to governance, ensuring meaningful engagement with their communities.
In his remarks at the forum's opening session on Saturday, Cities Minister Adam Shareef Umar commended the transformative contributions of local councils. He credited their wide-ranging initiatives with not only strengthening the governance framework but also fostering public trust in local institutions. Minister Umar described these achievements as integral to the nation's progress towards decentralisation.
