President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on Saturday announced a 1,360 Housing Unit Project for the capital Male’.
At a press conference held at the President's Office, President Dr Muizzu outlined his Administration’s plan to address the long standing housing shortage throughout the country.
The President said that while he was the Mayor of Male’ City, an agreement was signed to implement a housing project for the residents of Sinamale’ and Male’ Hiyaa housing complex in Male’.
He said the Administration is planning to continue the project through the current Male’ city council.
According to the President, the new project includes 4-bedroom, 3-bedroom and 2-bedroom units which amounts to a total of 1360 housing units. The first two towers will be built under the project, he said, adding that units will be allocated to the 128 families living in Male’ Hiyaa and Sinamale’.
The remaining housing units will be allocated to other housing schemes, he added.
The two housing complexes were built over three decades ago and are now severely rundown due to lack of proper maintenance over the years.
"The flats in Sinamale’ and Male’ Hiyaa are severely rundown. Those flats are mortgage free. The new complex will be built and units will be allocated to these families. The two rundown buildings will be demolished and redeveloped under this project,” he explained.
Other projects planned for Male’ include 4,200 flats under the Indian Line of Credit and 400 housing units under the Saudi Development Fund (SDF), the President noted.
President Dr Muizzu also said the reclamation of Phase 3 of Hulhumale’ will also be completed by July.
The President said that the government will honour his presidential pledge to provide flats to those who were unfairly omitted from housing schemes by previous governments.
He also shared details of ongoing and planned projects in Atolls.
The President said the government aims to complete the housing projects throughout the country within the next three years.
