President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has forcefully denied allegations of judicial interference, reaffirming his commitment to an independent judiciary. Responding to recent accusations, he stated unequivocally that he has never influenced judicial proceedings and will not do so in the future.
The integrity of institutional appointments, he stressed, is safeguarded by legal mandates. Officials selected for independent bodies, he said, are expected to operate solely within the confines of the law. "No judge will have the opportunity to say that I influenced them," he asserted, maintaining that he does not monitor court schedules or rulings.
His comments extended to the legal situation of former President Abdulla Yameen. President Muizzu reiterated that he would not intervene—whether in President Yameen's case or any other judicial matter—while expressing deep respect for the former leader.
Recalling the political landscape of the 2018 presidential election, President Muizzu described his efforts as relentless, stating that he had worked "day and night" to secure President Yameen's victory. The former president's imprisonment, he argued, was politically motivated. In his first conversation with his predecessor, former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, President Muizzu said his initial request upon winning the election was for President Yameen's release.
Delivering his first national address after assuming office, President Muizzu reinforced his stance, stating that he would not interfere in judicial affairs and that politically motivated imprisonments had come to an end.
