Agreement signed to establish Cancer Centre in Hulhumalé

The Government on Thursday signed an agreement with Manipal Hospital of to establish a cancer centre in Hulhumalé. The proposed cancer centre would be established at Hulhumalé Hospital.

Speaking at the function held to sign the agreement with Manipal Hospital of India, Health Minister Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim thanked the Governments and private sector of neighbouring countries for their contributions to health sector development projects in the Maldives.

Citing that the biggest chunk of funds from the National Health Insurance Scheme Aasandha go to cancer and heart diseases, the Health Minister reiterated the Government’s commitment to minimise healthcare costs by making necessary treatments available in the country.

He said that the facility being developed in Hulhumalé will ease access to cancer-related health services, including screening and chemotherapy.

Under the agreement, the proposed Cancer Centre will be established within 3 months, and become operational in November. National Social Protection Authority (NSPA) will work with Manipal Hospital over the course of the next 2 or 3 months to train doctors and nurses for the new centre.

The agreement was signed by Managing Director of Aasandha Pvt Ltd Maumoon Abdul Samad, Chief Executive Officer of NSPA Mujuthaba Jaleel, and Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Manipal Hospital Dr. Ajay Bakshi.
