President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom on Sunday laid the foundation for the 5th Power Development Project in Hulhumalé.
The ceremony was held Sunday afternoon at the Hulhumalé industrial area.
The 5th Power Development Project is being carried out by State Electric Company Ltd (STELCO), with the assistance of China's Dongfang Electric Corporation. On completion, the new power plant would have the capacity to generate 50 MW of power to Malé, Hulhulé and Hulhumalé, via the Maldives-China Friendship Bridge.

Speaking at the function, Environment Minister Thoriq Ibarhim said the project marks an important milestone in the development of the country’s power sector.
President of China's Dongfang Electric Corporation, Low Xi Gan said the company would do its maximum to contribute to the development of the power sector in the Maldives.
The ceremony was attended by the Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives Wang Fukang, and members of the Cabinet.
