President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has pledged to initiate several infrastructure development projects in Magoodhoo, Noonu Atoll before the end of the year.
Addressing residents of Magoodhoo during his visit to the island as part of four day tour of the Atoll, President reflected on his electoral pledges to the island, explaining that after assuming office he had explored ways to organise new projects and resume stalled projects across the Maldives.
With the developmental vision now systemised, the government is now initiating efforts to kickstart projects throughout the island nation, the President explained.
In his address, the President first highlighted the island’s long-delayed water and sewerage project. He explained that under his Administration, the work has been structured across multiple state-owned companies, with Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) overseeing material procurement and Fenaka Corporation Limited providing the required human resources for implementation.
President Dr Muizzu further revealed that numerous development agreements across the Maldives are expected to be signed in September, with work commencing soon after. For Magoodhoo specifically, he announced plans to extend the Health Centre and assured residents that staffing shortages would be resolved in coordination with the relevant ministry. He also pledged to address space constraints at the local school and to facilitate developments in the island’s sports sector.
Additionally, he announced that the coastal protection project for Magoodhoo is scheduled to be signed next month. The initiative will include the development of a designated area for beachgoers and swimmers. The President stressed that practical work on these projects would begin soon.
Concluding his remarks, President Dr Muizzu expressed hope that his next visit to Magoodhoo would be to celebrate the successful completion of these initiatives.
As part of his visit to Magoodhoo, President Dr Muizzu officially inaugurated the island’s new harbour during a small ceremony.
First developed in 2017, the government had spent nearly USD 3 million to upgrade Magoodhoo’s harbour for the 350 resident population.
The project was carried out by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company Limited (MTCC).
During the visit, the President attended the groundbreaking of the new police station on Magoodhoo, a component of his administration's commitment to establishing security facilities on every island within two years.
Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihsaan officially broke ground on the new police station in Magoodhoo with Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen, Fenaka Corporation Limited’s Managing Director Mohamed Najah and Magoodhoo Island Council Vice President in attendance.
The infrastructure expansion forms part of a government-wide initiative to establish law enforcement services across all inhabited islands within a two-year timeframe.
This year has already seen the launch of multiple police station developments on islands previously without permanent facilities. Government officials maintain that full territorial coverage will contribute meaningfully to building a secure and peaceful society.
President Dr Muizzu, during his visit, witnessed the groundbreaking of the Magoodhoo Fitness and Recreation Centre.
The Magodhoo Fitness and Recreation Centre project has been awarded to MTCC.
The government has earmarked the development of fitness and recreation centres in all parts of the country before the end of next year, aimed at encouraging healthy lifestyles under the wider objective of building a healthier society.
During the visit, President Dr Muizzu met with members of Magoodhoo Island Council, the Women’s Development Committee (WDC), and heads of local institutions, to discuss the island’s key developmental priorities.
At the meeting, council members highlighted several pressing concerns, including coastal erosion and space constraints at the island’s school. They also called for the expedited implementation of water and sewerage systems, as well as the work at the Health Centre. Additionally, they emphasised the need to establish a designated swimming area and a football ground for youth recreation.
In response, President Dr Muizzu assured that the concerns raised would be given due consideration. He also provided updates on ongoing projects through accompanying Cabinet Ministers and heads of State-Owned Enterprises.
President Dr Muizzu’s visit to Magoodhoo is the 11th stop on his four day tour of Noonu Atoll. He is scheduled to visit 13 islands across the Atoll before ending the tour on Thursday.
