Students Across Maldives Head to First Term Break

Students across the Maldives ended the first term of the new academic year, before beginning a 16 day break on Thursday.

All students who completed the first term have received their report cards with the term officially ended and the first term break will last for 16 days.

The second term is scheduled to begin on 10 August and will run until 25 December when students will start their longest break until 22 January 2026.

This academic year, around 84,000 are enrolled in 217 government schools across the island nation. Similar to other years, the number of students studying in schools in capital Male’ city is relatively high, with 19 different schools and 19 percent of the entire teaching staff teaching 33 percent of the entire student population.

The government aims to return the academic calendar to a January start, as it was before the COVID-19 pandemic caused the shift to mid-year. The Ministry of Education has noted that many parents and students prefer the January start and has developed a plan to transition the academic year back to January in 2026.

Maldives Police Service (MPS) meanwhile is conducting a special awareness programme dubbed ‘Safe Holidays’.

The three-day programme launched on 22 July, is being conducted with the support of the Male’ Frontline Policing Neighborhood Support.

During the ‘Safe Holidays’ campaign, Police are visiting crowded areas, businesses, guesthouses and households to raise public awareness on securing home and valuables before leaving on vacation.

In addition, Police are also raising awareness on the recent increase in scam cases and road safety amid a sharp increase in road accidents especially in the capital Male’.
