President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on Saturday shared a heartfelt message with the Maldivian people as the nation marks its 60th Independence Day with formal ceremonies and public celebrations. The day commenced with a flag-hoisting ceremony in Malé, where the president greeted attendees as part of the official proceedings.
The president's address, issued via social media, conveyed warm wishes to the Maldivian people and underscored the occasion's historical weight. "I wish to extend my most sincere greetings and heartfelt best wishes to the beloved citizens on this proud Independence Day of the Maldivian people," President Muizzu wrote. He concluded with a prayer, stating, "May this beloved nation forever remain in independence and prosperity. Amen."
Following the morning's formalities, a programme of public events was scheduled to continue throughout the day. Cultural performances, parades, sports activities and school presentations are among the events planned to encourage civic participation. Gatherings were set to take place in and around Republic Square.
The annual observance, held on 26 July, marks the date in 1965 when the Maldives formally ended its status as a British protected territory and attained full independence.
