Parliament approves amendment to Political Parties Act

Parliament on Wednesday approved an amendment to the Political Parties Act, making it mandatory for members of political parties to resubmit membership forms with fingerprints.

The bill, tabled by Feydhoo MP Ibrahim Didi, was passed with 40 votes in favour, and 25 against with one abstention.

The Committee report on the Bill was presented to the floor by Chair of the Committee on Independent Institution, MP for Vilhifushi, Riyaz Rasheed.

Eight Members spoke during time allocated for debate on the Committee report.

First Reading of the Bill was held on 22 March 2016 and was sent for Committee review on 29 March 2016.
