Electricity, healthcare and education targeted in Lhaimagu under President Muizzu’s infrastructure strategy

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced an extensive programme of infrastructure upgrades and public service expansion for the island of Lhaimagu, Shaviyani Atoll, pledging to address longstanding gaps in utilities, healthcare, education, and civic amenities. The commitments were presented during a recent consultative meeting with residents, where the president reiterated his administration’s intent to deliver targeted improvements across critical sectors.

Infrastructure upgrades target electricity reliability and expanded healthcare access

Responding to urgent concerns raised by the community, President Muizzu confirmed that the government is prioritising the resolution of Lhaimagu’s persistent electricity issues. Remedial work is already underway, and the administration will undertake all necessary measures to ensure reliable power supply.

Healthcare infrastructure forms a central pillar of the development plan. A new health centre is slated for construction, designed to extend service hours to 16 hours daily and improve both patient care and operational capacity. “We are developing this facility to incorporate a four-bed ward, a dedicated nurse station, a laboratory, a procedure room, a private room, and a garage,” stated President Muizzu.

Development plans revive stalled civic projects and modernise school infrastructure

Plans for civic infrastructure include the establishment of a fitness and recreation centre, a new council building, and the healthcare centre itself. Addressing delays in previously mandated projects, the president confirmed that the waste management initiative, assigned under the previous administration but left unimplemented, will commence this month. Additional commitments include resolving issues affecting the island’s harbour and completing construction of a handball court.

In the education sector, several initiatives are scheduled for inclusion in the upcoming budget cycle. These include the development of a new office building for the island’s school, which will house modern educational facilities.

“The new school building will be designed to incorporate a dedicated library, a science laboratory, and a health room,” President Muizzu elaborated. “This endeavour will be allocated funds within the budget for the upcoming year. We intend to commence this project as early as possible next year.”

Community investments to strengthen public spaces, security, and religious life

Recreational and educational enhancements also featured prominently in the president's address. The repair of the existing futsal field is set to proceed, and a swimming track facility is planned for development in the coming year. The president further pledged to construct a dedicated police building for Lhaimagu, reinforcing the island’s security infrastructure.

Lhaimagu is also included in a nationwide initiative to establish branches of the National Center for the Holy Quran across all inhabited islands. This programme will be implemented in phases over the current year and the following three years. Under this initiative, a branch of the National Center for the Holy Quran will be established in Lhaimagu.
