President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has pledged a lasting solution to flooding in Kunahandhoo, acknowledging the island’s persistent flooding issues over the years.
President Dr Muizzu gave this assurance during his visit to the inhabited islands of Laamu Atoll, where he met with the community of Kunahandhoo. President Muizzu affirmed that the newly signed road development project for the island will incorporate a permanent and integrated solution to address the problem.
During the meeting, residents urged the President to expedite the completion of the island’s water and sewerage system and to ensure the timely implementation of the newly approved shore protection project. They also raised concerns about accessibility issues and poor road conditions, calling on the President to maintain close oversight of the school development project, even though its implementation has been delegated to another contractor.
Residents further highlighted several pressing community challenges, including the limited space available at the council office, the lack of a dedicated meeting hall, and the lack of adequate healthcare facilities.
The President assured the community that their views would be considered in the development of the island, and reaffirmed his intention to shape Kunahandhoo’s development in line with the people’s aspirations.
The President further noted that the work to address the island’s key concerns is progressing at various stages. Regarding the concerns about the space constraints faced by the island’s school, the President confirmed that the school project is progressing under Fenaka Corporation Limited’s supervision, with essential materials to be delivered once weather conditions improve. He expressed confidence that the project would be completed ahead of the next academic year. He also pledged to resolve the island’s long-standing issues with water supply and sewerage.
The President said that although the groundbreaking ceremonies for the island’s health centre and the police station could not be held during the visit, work on both projects would commence immediately.
The President further assured residents that all ongoing and newly launched projects would be carried out with diligence and transparency. He noted that the planned shore protection project would include a designated swimming zone for the community.
The meeting concluded with the formal presentation of a commemorative plaque from the Bank of Maldives to the Kunahandhoo Island Council, ceremoniously handed over by President Dr Muizzu.
As part of the President’s visit, an agreement was signed to hand over the development of the island’s Fitness and Recreation Centre to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC). The centre will be developed over an area of 4,005 square feet, to be completed over 240 days at a cost of USD 320,365.
The development of the island’s volley court was also handed over to MTCC for USD 80,338.6, to be completed over 120 days.
