FIFA President Infantino Pledges Major Football Investment for Maldives

The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) President Gianni Infantino has pledged significant investment and the implementation of key development projects in the Maldives following a high-profile visit to the archipelago nation on Friday.

Infantino, speaking in a video message shared on social media following his visit, affirmed that FIFA is committed to enhancing grassroots and regional football, describing the Maldives as a “true” footballing nation.

The commitment by Infantino includes launching two crucial initiatives - the global ‘Football for Schools’ project and the establishment of new FIFA arenas. Infantino stated that these projects are central to FIFA’s strategy to promote football development across the entire country, specifically targeting regional tournaments involving all islands, alongside boosting Maldivian and broader South Asian football standards.

The FIFA President’s historic first visit to the Maldives was made at the invitation of Football Association of Maldives (FAM) President Ahmed Thoriq. Infantino described his time in Malé, which included a visit to the national stadium and meeting hundreds of excited young children, as a "very, very emotional day," noting the widespread passion for the sport.

"It's a beautiful country. It's a country with very good people. Most importantly, it's a true footballing nation. From kids to grandparents, they love football," Infantino remarked, emphasising the warm welcome he received, starting with his arrival at Velana International Airport (VIA).

During his trip, Infantino engaged in high-level dialogue concerning the future of Maldivian football, holding important discussions with FAM President Thoriq and Exco members. Additionally, he highlighted the honour of meeting the Maldivian President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, calling their interaction, which included a exhibition football match, a "very special moment."

"FIFA is here to work with everyone and Maldives football is expanding and improving day by day,” he said, underscoring FIFA’s partnership approach in the Maldives.
