President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has called for greater emphasis on ensuring the safety of workers in the workplace.
The President made the appeal in a post shared on social media to express his condolences following a tragic accident at the Maldives Ports Limited port area, in which two employees lost their lives.
In his message, President Muizzu conveyed heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased - Ali Aflah Abdullah and Masood Hussain - as well as to the management and staff of MPL. He also prayed to Almighty Allah to grant eternal blessings of Paradise to the victims.
The President further urged authorities to give top priority to worker safety across all occupational environments to prevent such incidents in the future.
An internal investigation has been launched into the incident, which occurred on Sunday when a landing craft capsized near the Male’ Commercial Port. In addition to the two fatalities, several others were injured and taken to hospital for treatment.
