Maldives Launches ‘Uthahi’ Waste Management Platform as National Symposium Concludes

The Maldives has officially launched ‘Uthahi’, a comprehensive database dedicated to waste management in the country.

The database, which consolidates important information on waste management, was inaugurated by the State Minister for Tourism and Environment, Mohamed Zaheen, at the closing ceremony of the ‘Magey Saafu Raajje National Symposium 2025’.

The Uthahi platform is designed to facilitate the recording, maintenance and reporting of waste management data. The platform features an administrative portal, a waste management system and a citizen application accessible to the general public.

Formally inaugurated by the Ministry of Environment on 19 June, the Magey Saafu Raajje Symposium provided a national platform for consultations on sustainable waste management methods. Held in Gan, Laamu Atoll, from 24 to 26 November, it sought to confront pressing challenges and operational difficulties in implementing long-term solutions. Its central aim was to identify specific remedies to sectoral obstacles and to deliberate on necessary advancements in this critical area. The event facilitated the exchange of ideas among participants, leading to the formulation of actionable plans and the discovery of sustainable solutions for the island nation.

The symposium was attended by 200 participants, including representatives from 88 islands in nine atolls, as well as government officials, industry experts and various stakeholders working towards sustainable development.
