The construction of the new Baa Atoll Hospital has officially commenced in Eydhafushi.
The practical work on the project was inaugurated by the Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim, during his ongoing tour of inhabited islands in Noonu and Baa Atoll.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the Health Minister said the project has long been desired by the residents of the atoll. The development of a new 50-bed hospital in Eydhafushi will bring significant benefits to both the island and the region as a whole, he noted.
The construction of the new hospital building has been contracted to the Road Development Corporation (RDC) for USD 11.7 million, to be completed within 540 days. The existing Baa Atoll Hospital in Eydhafushi sees heavy traffic, with a significant number of patients seeking service at the hospital daily.
The government is undertaking significant efforts to further strengthen the health services provided in the atolls, with plans to develop islands with large populations, such as Eydhafushi, as urban centres.
