Gov’t reaffirms commitment to developing elite athletes

Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation Abdulla Rafiu has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to developing elite athletic talent, echoing President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge to establish modern sporting infrastructure across the Maldives.

Speaking at the inauguration of a newly constructed outdoor volleyball court in Olhuvelifushi, Lhaviyani Atoll, Minister Rafiu said the administration is continuing to expand sports facilities across the islands to nurture professional athletes and promote public health.

He highlighted Olhuvelifushi’s strong track record in producing players for the national volleyball team, noting that providing high-quality facilities in such communities is essential to sustaining long-term athlete development.

The project, completed over an 18-month period, was implemented in collaboration with the Olhuvelifushi Island Council and funded through the ministry’s general sports budget after it was not included in last year’s specific budget allocations. Minister Rafiu expressed his appreciation to the island council and the Member of Parliament for Kurendhoo for their support.

To mark the opening of the facility, the Minister performed the ceremonial first service and officiated a commemorative volleyball match.
