President Muizzu announces waiver of Hiyaa maintenance fee

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the USD 12,970 maintenance fee for Hiyaa social housing flats in Hulhumalé Phase II will be waived.

The announcement was made during a community meeting with residents of Hulhumalé Phase II.

Addressing the meeting, the President said the Hiyaa flat agreements will be amended to remove the maintenance fee, in line with a pledge made during the presidential election. He confirmed that instructions have been issued to the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) to revise the relevant agreements and assured residents that the waiver will be implemented.

On rental matters, President Muizzu said concerns raised by residents will be taken seriously and that previously announced rent reductions will be enforced. He added that solutions will also be explored for flat owners facing payment difficulties, once all necessary information has been collected.

The President criticised the existing system under which rent payments increase after seven years, describing it as flawed. He further stated that assistance will be provided to Hiyaa residents who have taken bank loans.
