Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has said President Dr Mohamed Muizzu is committed to governing with full transparency and accountability, describing it as a central pillar of the administration’s policy agenda.
Speaking at the opening of the People’s National Congress campaign centre for the Maafannu Hulhangu (West) constituency, the Vice President said President Muizzu had taken office with a clear vision for national development, focused on stability, security and long-term progress across the country.
He emphasised that accountability is a fundamental right in a multi-party democracy, noting that the opposition has an important role in holding the government to account. However, he stressed that this responsibility must be exercised in a constructive and respectful manner, warning against rhetoric that could fuel social unrest, hatred or division.
Referring to political tensions in the past, the Vice President said the country should avoid repeating the events of early 2008, adding that such confrontations do not reflect the aspirations of today’s generation. He said debates on leadership and governance should be conducted with decorum and integrity, and described President Muizzu as a leader willing to remain answerable to the public.
The Vice President also highlighted ongoing social challenges in Malé City, saying the President has prioritised efforts to restore the nation’s social fabric. He pointed to the introduction of laws, regulations and policies through Parliament aimed at addressing these issues.
However, he noted that the government has not yet received the level of cooperation it had hoped for from the Malé City Council during the current administration’s term.
