Gov't inaugrates National Water and Sewerage Policy

The National Water and Sewerage Policy, designed to assure clean water and efficient sewerage systems has been officially inaugurated today.

This policy was inaugurated at a special ceremony by the Minister of Tourism and Environment (MoTE), Thoriq Ibrahim.

MoTE has stated that the aim of this policy is to develop and strengthen water and sewerage systems, establish a framework to ensure a continuous, reliable supply as well as to expand supply coverage nationwide. In addition to this, the policy is an important step to raise the standards of these services, and provide equal access to all residents, the Ministry has said.

Key components of the policy include, the protection of natural freshwater, as well as using new technological advancements to create progress in this field. Furthermore, particular emphasis is placed on research and developing human resources.

As this policy comes into effect, the ministry detailed that public awareness programmes will be held about this policy. The ministry stated that this is part of government efforts working to ensure environmental protection and raise living standards in the Maldives.
