Laboratory services established in 11 islands under nationwide health initiative

The Ministry of Health has announced the establishment of laboratory services in 11 islands as part of a nationwide effort to ensure equitable healthcare access across the Maldives.

The initiative, launched in February 2024, aims to provide essential diagnostic facilities to islands that previously lacked laboratory services. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has pledged that laboratory services proportionate to each island’s population will be delivered by the end of this year, addressing longstanding public concerns over limited access to medical testing.

For years, residents of many atolls have had to travel to regional hospitals or Malé for basic diagnostic services, resulting in additional costs and delays. The project seeks to reduce these disparities and extend healthcare access to all inhabited islands.

According to the Ministry, 76 islands without laboratory facilities have been prioritised for development this year. As of 18 February, 11 laboratories are fully operational.

Officials stated that laboratory services are fundamental to effective healthcare delivery, supporting early disease detection, timely treatment and improved public health outcomes.

The expansion is expected to strengthen preventative care and build a more resilient healthcare system throughout the Maldives.
