Maldives’ sea-to-air cargo service exports 140 tonnes in January

A total of 140 tonnes of cargo were shipped abroad in January through the sea-to-air cargo service to six countries, equivalent to 26 TEUs.

Sea-to-air cargo involves bringing goods by sea and then transporting them onward by air. The service was launched on 15 May 2024, and is jointly operated by Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) and Maldives Ports Limited (MPL).

The service is now connected to more than 17 airlines. According to MPL statistics, the airlines that transported goods in January were Virgin Atlantic, Etihad Airways, Lufthansa, Swiss Airline and Turkish Airline.

The sea-to-air service is expanding rapidly and has generated millions of dollars for the economy. The Maldives, with its wide range of international airline connections, has significant potential to further grow this service.
