In response to disruptions to international air travel linked to unrest in the Middle East, the Ministry of Tourism and Environment has issued an urgent advisory urging resorts and tourist service providers to verify airline schedules before transporting guests to Velana International Airport (VIA).
Several airlines have cancelled flights to and from the Maldives following airspace closures over parts of the Middle East. More than 1,400 tourists were reported stranded at the airport within the past 24 hours.
Up to eight inbound and outbound flights were cancelled, with additional disruptions reported on 1 March, increasing logistical challenges for travellers and operators.
The Ministry stated that it is coordinating closely with aviation authorities, civil aviation regulators and Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) to assess the situation and respond to passenger concerns.
Minister of Tourism Thoriq Ibrahim visited the airport to meet affected tourists and oversee arrangements for food, accommodation and updated travel guidance.
The Ministry advised affected guests to follow official communications from airlines and local authorities, noting that flight schedules remain subject to change. Resorts and tourism establishments have been instructed to maintain regular contact with airline representatives and travel partners to avoid unnecessary transfers and to safeguard guest welfare during the disruption.
