MACL sets up special counters at VIA for cancelled flights

The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has set up special service counters for airlines with cancelled international flights, at the domestic terminal of Velana International Airport (VIA).

MACL is working to address the difficulties faced by passengers due to the ongoing Middle East crisis. A large number of flights passing through the Middle East have been cancelled following airspace closures, causing tourists to become stranded in the Maldives and disruptions for those attempting to travel to the Maldives.

According to MACL, several measures are being taken to mitigate the situation and provide support to the affected passengers. In this regard, a Disruption Management Centre was established on 28 February, utilising the domestic terminal to provide additional services and convenience. As of Saturday night, 130 passengers had already received essential assistance with the help of relevant authorities.

MACL said a total of nine flights were cancelled on 28 February, affecting 1,716 passengers. On 1 March 2026, 19 flights were cancelled, affecting approximately 3,530 passengers.

MACL is coordinating with the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, Visit Maldives Corporation, airlines and tour operators to resolve the difficulties faced by passengers. Despite the cancellations, MACL has assured the public that operations at VIA remain normal.
