New mosques and Quranic branches planned as government formalises 14 island projects

The administration of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has formalised agreements with several private contractors to execute 14 infrastructure projects across the country, marking a significant expansion of the nation's Islamic sector.

The signing ceremony, held on 19 March at the Islamic Centre, codifies the government's pledge to decentralise religious and educational resources. These agreements are part of a broader campaign encompassing more than 90 ongoing projects, including the development of Waqf properties and regional religious hubs, according to official disclosures.

A primary focus of the accords is the establishment of regional branches for the National Centre for the Holy Quran. Wenza Company Private Limited was awarded contracts for facilities in Gadhdhoo in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, Maradhoo in Addu City, Maafushi in Kaafu Atoll, Maamigili in Alifu Dhaalu Atoll, and Mulah in Meemu Atoll. Ayyabe Partners was entrusted with branches in Kudahuvadhoo in Dhaalu Atoll and Veymandoo in Thaa Atoll, while White Link Private Limited will develop a site in Fonadhoo in Laamu Atoll. Afami Maldives Private Limited has been appointed to construct branches in Manadhoo and Velidhoo in Noonu Atoll, and Dhuvaafaru in Raa Atoll.

The infrastructure drive extends to the construction of new places of worship, with Afami Maldives commissioned to build a 500-capacity mosque in Maamendhoo in Gaafu Alifu Atoll and a 300-person facility in Feevah in Shaviyani Atoll. In Eydhafushi in Baa Atoll, SAS E Construction Private Limited will develop a comprehensive Islamic Centre, a project officials heralded as a cornerstone advancement for the island’s communal affairs. This nationwide effort reflects the special priority the administration has placed on facilitating religious affairs.
