Utility works and harbour expansion underway in Boduthakurufaanu Magu

The modernisation of the northern waterfront stretch of Boduthakurufaanu Magu has entered a high-intensity phase of construction as engineers pivot toward a comprehensive renewal of the thoroughfare’s water and sewerage networks, the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) announced this week.

This strategic shift marks a critical milestone in the capital’s infrastructure evolution, as the contractor prioritises the replacement of subterranean utility grids to ensure the long-term viability of the urban corridor. To mitigate the risk of service interruptions, the MTCC is executing these upgrades in close coordination with respective utility providers.

Preliminary structural development has commenced on pedestrian sidewalks and an integrated stormwater drainage system, coinciding with significant enhancements to the maritime interface. Along a 90-metre stretch extending from the Henveiru Ferry Terminal to Fishermen’s Park, crews are utilising secure sheet piling to advance the harbour wall three metres outward, providing the necessary width for a more expansive waterfront road.

This undertaking constitutes the third stage of the modernisation, specifically targeting a 700-metre expanse from the Izzuddin Jetty to the Henveiru Ferry Terminal. While a 380-metre section toward the North Harbour has already been established, the current works are being meticulously aligned with the architectural frameworks of prior segments. When completed, the master project will have achieved the structural renewal of 610 metres of the inner quay wall.
