Geotechnical survey commences for new Commercial Harbour

Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has stated that geotechnical surveys have commenced as part of the design and survey work for the first phase of development of the main Commercial Harbour of the Maldives in Thilafushi.
This project was allocated to China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) in February 2025.

Geotechnical surveys are carried out prior to the construction of infrastructural projects such as buildings, bridges and harbours. This scientific investigation determines the layers of soil, their capacity to withhold weight, and the most suitable ways to lay a foundation. This is essential for safe engineering work.

MPL has informed that the first international and domestic quay wall surveys carried out by CHEC have been completed ahead of schedule.

The development and relocation of the main Commercial Harbour to Thilafushi will expand the capacity of the port from five to 20 hectares, MPL has detailed. The company has stated that 650 meters of quay wall, 125 meters of roadside jetty, as well as an x-ray facility, automated facilities and bonded warehouses will be established as part of this initiative.
