President Muizzu inaugurates state-run taxi service

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu officially inaugurated the ‘Malé Taxi Line’ during a ceremony at Hulhumalé Central Park, marking a decisive government intervention to rectify chronic urban mobility deficiencies.

Accompanied by First Lady Sajidha Mohamed, the president’s presence underscored a commitment to resolving an acute taxi shortage that has long subjected residents to significant logistical hardships. Ahmed Saudee, Managing Director of the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), noted that this scarcity was among the most prominent grievances voiced by citizens during consultations with the president.

The service utilises a fleet of 150 eco-friendly electric cars, manufactured by Changan Automobile Group and selected for being easily manoeuvrable within Malé’s congested thoroughfares. Operating 24 hours a day with three vehicle sizes, the initiative is supported by a workforce of 407 drivers, including 285 full-time professionals and 122 part-time operators.

Saudee characterised the launch as a significant advancement, stating, "I am certain that the introduction of the Malé Taxi Line will catalyse a revolutionary transformation within the national taxi industry." He further urged his staff to prioritise excellence, remarking, "It is my earnest request that every employee of MTCC works diligently to ensure the service launched tonight is wholly embraced by the public, earns their steadfast trust, and ultimately brings them happiness."

This expansion reflects broader policy goals to advance vital infrastructure nationwide without bias toward population size, with the MTCC independently managing a substantial portion of these national development efforts.
