HRCM urges to respect democratic decisions and election outcomes

The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) urged to accept the public’s decision made through a democratic process.

In a social media post, HRCM called to accept the results of the 4 April elections and resolve any concerns through the rule of law.

A total of 294,876 individuals were eligible to vote in the elections. The three votes taken on Saturday include the local council elections, the Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections, and a referendum on shortening the current parliament’s term and aligning presidential and parliamentary elections on the same day.

A total of 588 ballot boxes were set up for the elections, including 240 in Male’ area, 322 in the atolls, 21 in resorts and 5 in prisons. A total of 2,961 candidates contested for the local council elections and the WDC elections: 1,368 for council seats and 1,593 for WDCs.
