President Muizzu appoints new Information Commissioner

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has appointed Abdul Azeez Jamaal Abu-Bakur as the Maldives’ new Information Commissioner, following the end of his predecessor’s term.

Abu-Bakur’s appointment was made under Article 44(d) of the Right to Information Act, after his nomination was submitted and approved by Parliament.

He previously served as Information Commissioner between 2014 and 2019. He has also held several senior government positions, including Minister of State for Islamic Affairs.

Most recently, Mr Abu-Bakur served as Minister of State for Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage.

His return to the Information Commission marks a second stint in the role, having previously served during the commission’s earlier years.
