The Maldives on Wednesday opened its first Embassy in Berlin, Germany.
The Embassy was officially opened by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Mohamed Asim.
Speaking at the function, Foreign Minister Asim highlighted the close bilateral relations that existed between Maldives and Germany, and stated that a permanent presence in Berlin would go a long way to further strengthening relations between not only the governments but also the peoples of the Maldives and Germany.
He also noted that 2016 marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Germany, and stated that the Maldives views the opening of an Embassy in Berlin this year as a significant milestone. During the past 50 years of formal diplomatic relations, both countries have maintained strong and friendly relations with each other, sharing parallel views and interests on a number of international issues, such as climate change, he added.
The Minister also expressed his gratitude for the immense contribution Germany has made towards economic development in the Maldives, particularly in the field of tourism.
Tourism is the largest economic industry in the Maldives and Germany has always been a key tourism market, with tourist arrivals amongst the highest from Europe. The Minister further stated that the quality and quantity of economic and trade links between Germany and the Maldives has increased in recent years and that the scope for trade expansion is immense.
He expressed hope that the partnership between Germany and the Maldives could be further expanded and consolidated in the coming years.
The function held at Hotel Adlon in Berlin, was attended by Ambassadors, German Public officials, members of business communities, especially from travel and the tourism sector, and the Maldivians resident in Germany.
