In a significant step towards resolving longstanding electricity issues, a new 250 kW generator has been installed and commissioned on Thakandhoo in Haa Alifu Atoll.
The generator became operational on 2 April, marking a key upgrade to the island’s energy infrastructure. The development directly addresses the rising demand for reliable electricity, driven by a growing population.
The installation forms part of the government’s wider initiative to strengthen electricity capacity across the Maldives. The strategy aims to provide stable power not only to densely populated urban centres but also to remote and sparsely populated islands, supporting equitable development and improving quality of life nationwide.
Speaking to PSM News, Abdulla Rasheed, Branch Manager of Fenaka Corporation Limited in Thakandhoo, confirmed the impact of the project. He said the new generator is expected to fully resolve the electricity challenges long faced by the island’s community.
The government and Fenaka Corporation believe the upgrade will ensure a more stable and adequate power supply, supporting both household needs and future economic growth on the island.
