Naifaru reclamation reaches 95 percent completion

The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has said 95 percent of reclamation works for Naifaru, Lhaviyani Atoll, has been completed.

The project to reclaim 44.8 hectares of land to Naifaru began in October 2025, as part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to the island.

According to MTCC, reclamation works are now 95 percent completed, with overall project progress standing at 70 percent. The company said rock boulder shipments have been delivered to the Naifaru site for revetment rock profiling works, adding that the project is currently progressing ahead of schedule.

When MTCC was awarded the project, 21 hectares of land were already being reclaimed on the island. However, as part of the government’s plans to develop the island as an urban centre, the area planned for reclamation was later expanded.

In addition to dredging, the project includes extensive coastal protection measures, such as 1,813 metres of large rock revetment, 803 metres of rock boulder outer seawall and 474 metres of large rock groynes to protect the reclaimed land from erosion.

Naifaru previously underwent land expansion, when 16 hectares reclaimed in 2004 to address housing needs. The current project is expected to significantly increase the island’s land area from its current 55 hectares, supporting its growing population and urban development.
