National Quran Recitation Competition commences

The 31st National Quran Recitation Competition commenced on Sunday with 183 contestants from Male’ and the atolls.

The competition was officially inaugurated by the minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Ahmed Ziyaad at a special function held Sunday evening. This is the first time the competition is divided into male and female categories. Unlike previous years, this year the competition will not have any age limits. The competition held annually since 1981 is aimed at instilling love for Quran among people of all ages.

Speaking at the function, Islamic Minister Dr Ziyad noted the importance of such a competition to promote correct recitation of Quran. The competition will also help identify talented individuals who can represent the country at international competitions, he said.

Contestants representing atoll and city councils, and religious NGOs are vying in this year’s competition which is held at the Islamic Centre in Male’.
