Tree planting ceremony held to mark 60 years of Maldives-Sri Lanka ties

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu joined his Sri Lankan counterpart President Anura Kumara Disanayaka to plant trees commemorating six decades of diplomatic relations between the two neighbouring nations.

The event took place at Vihara Mahadevi Park in Colombo, where the two leaders planted specimens of 'Horsfieldia iryaghedhi,' a critically endangered species native only to Sri Lanka. The choice of this rare endemic tree underscored both the uniqueness of the bilateral relationship and the shared commitment of both nations to environmental stewardship for generations to come.

The tree planting ceremony represents more than a commemorative gesture as it embodies the robust and enduring friendship that has flourished between the Maldives and Sri Lanka since the establishment of diplomatic relations on 26 July 1965.

According to the President's Office, the activity symbolises the close bilateral relations and continued growth of cooperation between the two countries, which have built their partnership on foundations of mutual respect and longstanding people-to-people connections spanning generations.

President Dr Muizzu's ongoing visit to Sri Lanka forms part of an intensive State Visit programme featuring high-level engagements designed to strengthen bilateral ties and advance cooperation across mutually beneficial sectors.

The tree planting ceremony joins a series of diplomatic activities aimed at charting the future course of Maldives-Sri Lanka relations as the two island nations look forward to enhanced partnership and collaboration.
