Home Minister credits President with major progress on undocumented migrants

Minister of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology, Ali Ihusaan has said the current government has made major progress over the past two years in addressing undocumented migrant workers in the Maldives, which previous governments had failed to resolve.

He made the statement in a social media post responding to a post by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on the progress of “Operation Kurangi”.

The President’s post had said 98 percent of foreign workers with valid active work permits have now been biometrically registered. The registration process includes the collection of 10 fingerprints and clear photographs for identification. On 17 November 2023, the figure had been only 17 percent.

The President added that the next six months will focus on locating and deporting remaining undocumented or illegal migrants.

Sharing the President’s post, Minister Ihusaan said that from the very first day of the current administration, President had entrusted the government with the critical national mission of addressing the undocumented migrant worker issue.

The minister said that over the past two years, the Home Ministry and all relevant government institutions worked tirelessly and with unwavering commitment to advance this important objective. He thanked everyone involved in the operation over the past two years for helping achieve the reported progress.
